Summer 2010 study abroad programme at American College Delaware

12 July – 6 August 2010

Introduction to American culture and society

A four week, two module, general education programme

This programme is designed to provide American College Dublin students who require general education courses with an introduction to America’s history, arts, politics, commerce and society. Delivered in an intensive format over four weeks (four hours a day, three days a week, plus one full day each week), the programme makes extensive use of American College Delaware’s location at the heart of the eastern seaboard, with each morning’s classroom lecture followed by a taught and assessed field trip to a relevant site.

Through the classroom-based lectures and discussions and the daily field trips the student will gain an academic and practical familiarity with American civilization, its historical context, its political and economic functioning and its socio-cultural development.

Full-day field trips:

  • New York City (American economy and society)
  • Washington DC (politics and the nation)
  • Amish and Mennonite country (religion in the New World)
  • Atlantic City (American entertainment)

Half-day field trips:

  • Philadelphia’s historic centre (two visits: Independence Hall, Liberty Bell, Carpenter’s Hall, First Bank of the United States, Museum of the American Constitution)
  • Brandywine Battlefield (War of Independence battle site)
  • Gettysburg (Civil War battle site)
  • New Castle (Delaware’s colonial capital)
  • The du Pont legacy (Hagley Museum, Nemours Mansion and Winterthur)
  • Attendance at a Philadelphia Phillies (2008 World Series champions) major league baseball game at Citizens Bank Park

Assessment: Worksheets requiring analysis of the sites visited and a research paper.

Cost: €2,950 (including tuition fees for two general education modules [these on their own at American College Dublin would normally cost approximately €1,300], accommodation and breakfast, insurance, transport and entry to all scheduled study tour events – not included are air fares and all other living expenses)
